Soạn Unit 5 Lớp 11: Speaking trang 56, 57 – Global Success

    Bài 1

    Human activities and global warming

Match the activities (1 – 3) with their possible effects on the environment (a – f).

    1. Cutting down or burning forests

    a. When burnt, fossil fuels release greenhouse gases, trapping heat in the atmosphere.

    b. When eating, these animals produce a lot of methane. This gas is responsible for nearly one-third of current global warming.

    2. Burning coal, oil, and gas

    c. Trees use CO2 to grow, so when they are cut down or burnt, the CO2 in the air increase.

    d. Carbon from fossil fuels combines with oxygen in the air to form large amounts of CO2.

    3. Raising farm animals like goats, sheep, and cows

    e. Forests store carbon in the trees and soil, and help reduce the global temperature.

    f. Forests are cut down to make space for farm animals.

    Gợi ý đáp án

    1. c, e

    2. a, d

    3. b, f

    Bài 2

    2. Use the sentences in the box to complete the conversation. Then practise it in pairs.

    A. First, deforestation leads to more CO2 in the air

    B. I think it’s cutting down or burning forests

C.This also makes the earth even warmer

    D. Well, there are two main reasons

Mark: Mai, which human activity is the main cause of global warming?

    Mai: (1) __________________________________ .

Mark: Why do you think so?

Mai: (2) ___________________________. (3) ___________________________. Trees use CO2 to grow, so when they are cut down or burnt, CO2 in the air increases.

    Mark: I see.

Mai: (4) ___________________________. Forests store carbon in the trees and soil, and help reduce the global temperature. That’s why I think cutting down or burning forests is the most serious problem.

    Gợi ý đáp án

    1. B

    2. D

    3. A

    4. C

    Bài 3

Work in pairs. Talk about the other human activities that contribute to global warming. Use the ideas in 1, the model and the tips in 2 to help you.

To present your ideas clearly in a discussion, you should:

    • state your opinion directly, e.g. I think/ believe the most serious problem is burning coal, oil, and gas.

    • introduce your arguments, e.g. There are two main reasons.

    • use linking words to order your arguments, e.g. First,/Second, …

    Besides,/Moreover,/In addition, ….

    Last,/Finally,…

Sophie: Hey John, have you heard about the different human activities that contribute to global warming?

John: Yeah, I have heard about some of them, like cutting down forests and burning fossil fuels.

Sophie: That’s right. Cutting down or burning forests releases carbon dioxide, but burning coal, oil, and gas also contribute to global warming. When fossil fuels are burnt, they release greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere.

John: That’s really interesting. I didn’t know that. Are there any other human activities that contribute to global warming?

Sophie: Yes, there are. For example, raising farm animals like goats, sheep, and cows also contributes to global warming. These animals produce a lot of methane, which is responsible for nearly one-third of current global warming.

John: Wow, I had no idea that raising farm animals had such a big impact on the environment. What about the impact of cutting down forests for farming?

Sophie: That’s a good point. Cutting down forests to make space for farm animals also contributes to global warming. Forests store carbon in the trees and soil, and help reduce the global temperature. When forests are cut down, the carbon is released into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming.

John: Thanks for sharing all this information with me, Sophie. It’s really eye-opening to learn about the different human activities that contribute to global warming.

    Bài 4

Work in groups. Decide which human activity contributes to global warming the most. Report to the whole class.

    Group discussion:

Member 1: In my opinion, burning fossil fuels is the human activity that contributes the most to global warming. When we burn coal, oil, and gas, they release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which traps heat and leads to global warming.

Member 2: I agree that burning fossil fuels is a major contributor to global warming, but I think that raising farm animals is just as significant. The methane produced by these animals is responsible for nearly one-third of current global warming.

Member 3: I think cutting down or burning forests is the most serious problem. Deforestation leads to more carbon dioxide in the air, and forests store carbon in the trees and soil, which helps reduce global temperature. When forests are cut down, the carbon is released into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming.

Member 4: I think all these activities are significant contributors to global warming, but I believe that burning fossil fuels is the most damaging. It not only releases carbon dioxide but also other harmful pollutants that affect air quality and human health.

    Group Conclusion:

After considering each member’s opinion, the group has concluded that burning fossil fuels is the human activity that contributes the most to global warming. However, they acknowledge that other activities such as raising farm animals and deforestation are also significant contributors to global warming and need to be addressed.
